The Value of Soft Skills
It’s easy to forget the importance of soft skills when in STEM careers, but that does not negate their value. Soft skills are often overlooked in STEM, and unsurprisingly, these are qualities that women bring to their teams in disproportionate numbers. Which is why it’s important to recognise that technical expertise is not the only quality that drives innovation. When these contributions aren’t recognised, it can mean that, as a woman, there is an expected additional emotional labour. This can make an already intensive workload even more unsustainable and draining.
However, being undervalued does not mean your work is any less important.
Despite being underappreciated, these skills are what allow STEM to move forward. Your ability to communicate and collaborate with your team is the driving force that allows for ideas to be effectively turned into tangible achievements.
Your work, your voice, and your influence are essential and shape the future of STEM.
Mini Career Tip 💜
Career Tip (for undergraduates)
Starting a career fresh out of Uni can be really daunting, and FeminSTEM is here to support you on your journey. This week we’d like to share some tips that we wish we knew when we left uni to help us in our career:
💜 Try small side projects, volunteering and online courses in different areas to get an idea of what interests you
💜 Ask for a 10 minute chat with professionals in different fields – you’d be surprised how many people want to help you succeed
💜 Speak to career advisors – they will be available to you even after Uni!
💜 Look online for different career panels and webinars that will help you learn more
Exploring a bit at a time can help you find what truly excites you and you can go into your career feeling more confident.
