July Meet Up Success!
July was our first feminSTEM meet-up, with an amazing turn out of women at all stages of their career. Having this variety worked so well as those early in their career (graduates/first job) could get first-hand advice and knowledge about what career options they have, and more importantly, how to get there! This meet-up was so successful that I’m now planning the second, and hoping to get even more women involved! If you have any ideas, send them over 😊
Newcastle University Collab
I’m so excited to share that FeminSTEM is now partnered with Newcastle University to provide support to STEM students in their placement and final year! This is just the start to bridge the gap in support between leaving University and finding your way in the professional STEM world.
Volunteer Opportunities
FeminSTEM is getting bigger, which means more activities, more events, more exciting collaborations. I’m always looking for people to join FeminSTEM so if you know someone who is passionate about empowering women and wants to be part of feminSTEM, reply to this email and let me know!
Weekly Inspo ⭐️
I want to tell you about the film Hidden Figures; I honestly felt so inspired and invigorated when I watched this film that I just have to share it with you all (sorry if you’ve already seen it!!). The films tells us the true story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson – three African-American mathematicians who worked at NASA during the space race in the 1960s.
Katherine Johnson: Calculated the trajectory for Alan Shepard’s first U.S. spaceflight in 1961.
Dorothy Vaughan: Became the first Black woman supervisor at NASA (though she had to fight for the recognition).
Mary Jackson: Began as a mathematician at Langley, then became NASA’s first Black female engineer.
The real story of Hidden Figures shows us, not just their genius, but the systemic barriers of racism and sexism they overcame as women in STEM. For years, their contributions were ignored in mainstream history; the film (based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s book) finally gave them the recognition they deserved.
FILM RECOMMENDATION: HIDDEN FIGURES (2016).
WHERE CAN I WATCH IT? Netflix.
Email me if you have any other inspirational films you’d recommend me to watch – I can’t get enough of them!!
